Introduction
Recruit Retail Services plc started working with the Tesco Store Development division in 2002, providing merchandising support for their new and refitted stores.
Situation
With a continuous expansion programme, Tesco realised that many of their existing stores contained a variety of redundant shelving units, making ordering replacement equipment both complex and costly. In addition, Tesco wanted to regulate their product groupings to reflect their corporate standard.
Tesco came to us with these two objectives, asking us to supply the project management and merchandising support teams to assist in standardising the fixture sizes and regrouping their products. The changes were predominantly required within the non-food section of each store, involving diverse product ranges from entertainment to clothing.

Solution
Prior to commencement, we completed a survey of each store to highlight potential problems (i.e. electrical equipment, flooring etc). Once these results were collated, our project managers liaised with the Tesco Senior Project Team to formulate the best strategy for each store. We utilised our merchandising experience to complete phasing documents per store, to recommend staffing levels and avoid excess costs. This procedure then determined the scheduling programme. Stores requiring similar team sizes and skill sets were pooled and then the most cost effective route for each team timetabled.
Our project managers ensured each team was fully briefed and that they had the correct equipment type, tools and merchandising skill levels to complete the tasks required. A full detailed project brief was written and presented to the teams prior to commencement.
Once the programme was underway, the project managers remained contactable for the teams, throughout the entire project, to advise and address potential issues.
Result
Recruit Retail Services plc have delivered successful reviews within 650 Tesco stores of differing formats.
